Align Your Dreams With Your Power

A Program for Middle and High School Students With A Disability

What: A motivational program presented by a dynamic author for students who have a disability
When: 2007-2008 School Year
Audience: All middle and high school students who have a disability

The purpose of this program is to provide evidence to students who have a disability that they have the ability right now to succeed both at school and in life.

It is essential that every middle and high school student hear this message because More than 30% of students who drop out of high school are students who have a disability.
They just give up.
We must stop this!
This inspiring and thought-provoking program will provide the encouragement students with a disability need to hear to keep moving forward with their education and with their dreams.

Using magic, humor, personal stories, and audience participation, Nancy engages the students in learning how to align their dreams with the power they possess.

Told she could never teach in the public schools because of her blindness, Nancy proved those doubters wrong and went on to have a very successful 21-year teaching career in the Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas.

Nancy's guide dog, Luke, will be with her. Luke is a beautiful and gentle Golden Retriever. He is intelligent, hard working, and, like people, must stay focused on his job in order to be successful.

"Nancy Shugart is an awesome speaker and motivator. Speaking from not only her vast experience, but also her heart, Nancy takes us through the motions of growing up with a profound vision impairment. We are allowed into a world that she has known all her life, and totally immersed in her upbeat and encouraging style of day to day living. Nancy touched us all and gave us a lesson in life that encourages us to live it to its fullest and stay positive. Thank you Nancy, for sharing your story with us!"
-Annie Brown, Director
Texas Youth Leadership Forum

Nancy takes the students through her very angry teenage years to the turning point of growing into a young lady who absolutely refused to give up on her dreams. Your students will learn the formula she used to turn her life around!

Your school will receive:

  • A 45 to 60-minute program that Nancy can repeat as needed during your half-day.
  • Review questions you can use as a written assignment or as a class discussion to review the main points learned in the program.
  • An autographed copy of Nancy's autobiography Challenged To Win.

Photo of Book Cover

"This is the first autobiography that I have ever enjoyed reading. It was fun doing my English project on Challenged to Win because it was easy to remember the facts because I enjoyed the book so much. Challenged to Win made me laugh because Nancy wrote the book with humor. I liked it a lot!"
-Dylan, age 11

How Much?
$800 per half-day (1-2 shows)
or
$1,500 for a full day (3-4 shows)
Full days can be split between two schools. Each school then only pays
$750 for their half-day!

See chart below for full-day requirements plus travel fee. Take special note of how you can have the cab fare waived for your school!

Note: The Texas Department of Public Safety refuses to allow me to drive (lol) for the simple reason that I am blind!
So below is a very cost effective way to get me from Austin to where you are. The travel fee will be split among all schools
in your area/district who have me booked during the same week as you do.
Yes, I know what you're thinking and you're right! (smile)
The more schools to split this travel fee the lower the travel fee per school!
Where cab fare is applicable, you may have the cab fare waived by simply finding someone at your school who can drive me to your school or drive me to the next school. It's that simple!
So here are the numbers!

Travel Fee
Travel Fee Location Required Minimum # of Full Days
Cab Fare Austin, Texas No minimum required
Cab fare Schools outside Austin but within the Region 13 Educational Service Area No minimum required
